Hilton's heart receives welcome boost

24.04.09

Labor candidate for Fremantle Peter Tagliaferri today welcomed the $3.5 million federal funding assistance to build a $4.7million community hub in the heart of Hilton.

Mr Tagliaferri said the project would improve the existing facilities which included an historic hall, Police and Citizens Youth Club (PCYC), community health centre, kindergarten, men's centres, education and sporting facilities.

"For more than five years, I have personally campaigned to expand the Hilton PCYC. I am excited about what this funding will be able to achieve for the area ," Mr Tagliaferri said.

"Labor has a clear commitment to building strong communities around Australia.

"During times of such global economic uncertainty it is important to invest in infrastructure that supports local jobs and local businesses.

"Local, state and federal governments should be doing all they can to bring forward infrastructure projects so people living in and around Fremantle can survive the downturn.

"With six per cent unemployment in Fremantle, local projects like this will make all the difference."

The Stage One upgrade will include a new arts workshop, an improved PCYC, upgraded street frontage on Paget Street and a new public open space.

"Our community will benefit from the redevelopment of this area and many residents will enjoy improved access to community services and programs," he said.
